For the first time in the schools (short) history, the Frederick Douglass Cheerleading squad took home first-place honors for the KHSAA 2019 State Competition Large Division.

Cheerleading: group of cheerleaders in their uniform holding a sign“I can’t begin to express how proud I am of these girls. To have the chance to compete and represent our school at the state level is such an honor,” said head coach Nicole Bersaglia. “This team has worked so hard and stayed so focused. They are strong, determined, humble, and amazingly talented. When we started two-and-a-half years ago, I never imagined that this type of success would come so soon. We are so honored to be the first state champion team at Frederick Douglass!”

Paul Laurence Dunbar High School were the runner-ups in large division, Lafayette placed fifth in the medium group and seventh in co-ed, and Henry Clay tied for seventh in the super division.

The competition was held on December 14 at the Alltech Arena at the Kentucky Horse Park.
